The Danish Shellfish Centre (DSC) was established in 2002 as a commercial operation. Today, the centre is part of DTU Aqua, National Institute of Aquatic Resources at the Technical University of Denmark.

The primary role of the Danish Shellfish Centre is to research the Limfjorden's shellfish and seaweed in both a Danish and international context. The centre uses modern technologies in the production of oysters, mussels and lobster in particular, but there are aims to increase production of multiple other species. More recently there have been developments in the production of seaweeds in the laboratory and field. Hopefully these will soon also appear on the dining table.

In 2013, the Danish Shellfish Centre opened an outreach centre, whose main tasks are to communicate and disseminate the latest results and knowledge in the field to primary and secondary school students, tourists, associations and companies. The outreach centre is designed to break the usual static methods of outreach and create a new, dynamic platform where the audience does not have to adapt to the outreach, but where the outreach adapts to the audience.
